Paying Bills Was a Social Event

I was fresh out of high school when I took a job at a childrens clothing store in my hometown of Iron River, Mich., in 1958. It wasn’t my first job. I had already been working for a couple of years as a waitress at a local restaurant and as a carhop atI never saw checks at those places. So when a classmate made a purchase with a check at the clothing store, I thought that was the ultimate sign of adulthood.
