Power match
I have a 1980 Mini, which was originally 998cc but for a number of years has been fitted with a 1275 engine from an early GT. The engine started knocking recently and has been removed and stripped – and it turns out that the block and crank are both maximum oversize and undersize respectively. I am weighing up what to do, but in the meantime I’ve been offered a low mileage 1098cc engine from a Clubman Estate. How difficult will it be to gain 1275 power from this unit?

It is certainly possible to achieve 1300 power from an 1100 – you’ll need to find approximately an additional 15bhp. A Stage 2 or 3 modified cylinder head, together with your 1½in SU or twin 1¼in SU carburettors, plus an LCB or Cooper freeflow exhaust manifold and suitable system, should provide the power increase you’re seeking.
