Health minister seeks funding

unemployed doctors must wait for budgets

PROVINCIAL health departments are mobilising resources to fund vacant posts in a bid to address the employment crisis facing newly-qualified medical doctors across the country.

At a press briefing on Monday, Minister of Health, Dr Joe Phaahla, said they were inundated with queries from the media and public about the fate of unemployed doctors.

He said they had conducted several engagements with the National Treasury to find creative ways to shield the health-care service and front-line workforce.

“The situation of need for employment for doctors is no different for other health professions like the nurses, physiotherapists, oral health hygienists, speech therapists, audiologists, and others,” he said.
