The view from the North Downs: birds to lift the heart

I WRITE this looking out on a cold, wet, miserable day! It is sufficient to make you long for the warm days of summer - but then, when I walk down the garden to my birdroom, I am assaulted by the exuberant singing of cock canaries, the burbling song of northern bullfinches and the calls of northern goldfinches. Inlittle thoughts of the breeding season.
