Robberies Register, 1909–1916

Those of us who have discovered an ancestor who had dealings with the criminal justice system will know how fascinating, and sometimes poignant, their stories can be. Warrington Archives holds a ‘Robberies Register’ from Warrington Borough Police revealing details of more than 2,000 crimes committed in the town between 1909 and 1916. They include the names of the perpetrators and victims, and provide valuable insights into the lives of ordinary people in the early 20th century. Philip Jeffs, archives and heritage officer, tells us more about it.
