THERE are 15 species of cranes, which share a graceful and statuesque pose, live long and pair for life. These birds are steeped in the folklore of numerous countries, especially those in Asia. Despite their spindly long legs and cloak-like wings, they always display poise and elegance. And, unlike other long-legged birds, cranes are fond of dancing and also provide a vocal accompaniment.

Most cranes are migratory. These are the most conspicuous and noisiest of migrating birds, flying in V-formation with unmistakable large broad wings and outstretched necks. Apart from the two crowned cranes, all species have a breathing organ that doubles as musical instrument. This is an extensive, convoluted trachea, which produces the characteristic trumpeting calls.
