DURING the early weeks of any new year, the emphasis with my Yorkshire canaries is to retain health and fitness, and gradually work them towards full breeding condition in readiness for pairing.
Management methods to achieve this can vary a great deal between different breeders, and the same goes for feeding methods. But it is the end result that matters: hens must be eager to nest and cock birds ready to fertilise. I work with the basic assumptions that a hen which is not in breeding condition will not build a nest and a cock bird will not be in full song-and-dance mode,
