SHOCK IVF RULING

Court decrees that embryos are children

AMERICAN in vitro fertilisation (IVF) providers have halted their services following a court ruling that grants fertilised eggs the same rights as children. In a groundbreaking ruling, Alabama’s highest court recently ruled that frozen embryos, created and stored for IVF, are “extrauterine children” under a state law.

This will now allow parents to sue for wrongful death of their minor children. The Supreme Court’s decision stems from three couples who filed a wrongful death lawsuit after their frozen embryos were accidentally destroyed at an Alabama fertility clinic in December 2020.
