We've come a long way since then. There are hundreds of binoculars to choose from, with prices ranging from “cute birthday present” to “good grief Gertrude”. So, how do you choose?

The name of the binoculars (Zeiss, Swarovski, Leica…) might be the first thing you notice, but right next to the model name are two numbers separated by an “x”, like 10x42. The number before the x indicates the magnification capability
