When we think of vanilla fragranced products, our olfactory memory conjures up whiffs of creamy, warm and saccharine notes but, while this is traditionally the association, it’s doing the component a disservice.

Vanilla is a hugely popular ingredient in fragrance for one simple reason: its versatility. It is rich and intriguing enough to wear for date night but sweet for daytime office days. It can be sultry, seductive and deep but also lightweight, dynamic and dare we say, fresh.

The adaptable nature of the note means that, depending on the other components it is paired with, it can give a totally different effect that is worlds away from the heavy body sprays of our youth (although don’t sleep on Sol de Janeiro’s nostalgic revival). Forget too the synthetic scent that dominates cheap candles.
