DID you know there’s an entire world of teeny, tiny organisms living around us that we can’t even see? They’re everywhere – even on your body. These tiny things are called micro-organisms, and they’re a diverse form of life that includes bacteria, fungi and viruses.
The word micro-organism comes from two words: micro, which means very small, and organism, which means living thing.
We need powerful microscopes to see them, and the study of micro-organisms is called microbiology. The people who study them are microbiologists. Microorganisms can also be called microbes.
