THIS is an important year for South Africans as we prepare for the national elections on 29 May. People are calling it the most important and unpredictable election since the first truly democratic elections in 1994. But what happens during an election, and why is it so important for people to vote?

UNDERSTANDING ELECTIONS

In South Africa, we have a democratic government , which means the people of the country can vote for who they want in charge. These elections take place every five years.
