At CES 2024 in January, I ran across a mind-blowing audio concept that didn’t seem like it should work at all but in fact sounded amazing. My presumption it wouldn’t work reflected an incomplete understanding of the fundamentals of how audio loudspeakers function. As we transition to this quarterly print format, we’re subdividing my traditional Technologue column, opening with a thorough explanation of an automotive concept even avid car lovers like me might not fully understand, then using that foundation to tee up an innovation like those this column has covered for years.
