Campaign furniture was specifically made for travel,’ explains dealer and specialist Sean Clarke. Most 200-year-old furniture will have had a relatively quiet existence, moving house only a handful of times. ‘But campaign furniture has lived a life,’ he says. ‘It's been places!’

In the late 18th and 19th centuries, the Napoleonic Wars, the American War of Independence, the Crimean War and other military campaigns necessitated long and arduous journeys. Along with the huge expansion of Empire, this created demand for sturdy, portable furniture of all kinds.
