Millions of Brits could be inadvertently breaking the law by not correctly abiding by privacy rules when they are operating their home security systems. Statistics show that nearly half of Britain’s homeowners have some type of surveillance system in place, from full CCTV setups to smart doorbells. However, installing security systems without following legal protocols could result in homeowners breaking the law, which could lead to fines of up to £100,000 or even criminal charges, MyBuilder.com is advising.
If cameras record anything outside the property, such as a pavement or a neighbouring garden, users are responsible for is therefore encouraging Brits to do their research and establish whether their home security system is compliant. The company suggests reading up on GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) rules, and installing signage to ensure that people are aware that recording devices are in place and, importantly, securely storing any footage.
