The bright green tractors we associate with the Deutz-Fahr brand today can trace their roots back more than 150 years, when Nikolaus August Otto and Eugen Langen demonstrated their ‘atmospheric gas power machine’ at the 1867 Paris Exposition.

Two years later, production of the new engine began, with units produced under licence in England by Crossley. A new factory in the Deutz district of Cologne, Germany, was opened and the company changed its name to Langen, Otto & Roosen.

In 1872, with interest in the technology gathering at pace, the factory expanded again, and Gasmotoren-Fabrik DEUTZ AG was formed, with a certain Gottlieb Daimler as Technical Director, and Willhelm Maybach as Head of Engine Construction.

Fast forward to 1898, following the departure of Daimler and Maybach, and the death of Otto and Langen in 1891 and 1895 respectively, the company’s first diesel engine was designed.

In 1921 the company joined forces with Motorenfabrik Oberursel AG and Motorenfabrik DEUTZ AG was formed. The first diesel-powered DEUTZ tractors
