ON weekday mornings after the school run, Gemma Moulton, the founder of East London Cloth, cuts through Victoria Park and over Regent’s Canal to Vyner Street to open her studio for business. East London Cloth was born during the first lockdown of 2020, in Ms Moulton’s flat in Hackney, and swiftly gained a following for its signature product: easy-to-order café curtains, offered in a choice of linens made in Northern Ireland, on slim brass rods you can cut to size yourself with a hacksaw. ‘Due to the practical nature of the café curtains, they seem to appeal to a real variety of people,’ says Ms Moulton. ‘London, obviously, due to the proximity of houses and need for privacy, but they are often sent to the most surprising places. Everywhere from the Isle of Skye to the hills of LA in the US.’

In addition to samples of the café curtains, the studio is stocked with Ms Moulton’s archival-inspired designs (buttoned-up jacquard blends of silk and linen; shimmering woven ikats) as well as fabrics from British companies,
