• Remove your watch. Time flows differently in much of the continent and the best thing a traveller can do is remove all preconceptions of how things are meant to run. Beyond this, watch every sunset. • Walking among zebras in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. • Sudan is the full package: magnificent pyramids, Red Sea beaches, a combination of sub-Saharan, Sahelian and Arab cultures, high-quality food and endless smiles. • The lack of tourism infrastructure, particularly in central Africa. There is a real distrust of foreigners there, which makes everything from visas to intercity travel a mission (to say the least). • With a big smile and patience. • Receiving a Facebook friend request from a Ghanaian border guard: “You seemed so friendly, so I kept your name to add you.”
