As I strolled to the toilet block, the camp caretaker shot me a big, warm smile.

‘How are you doing?’ said cheery David, then 73. ‘Keeping cool?’

It was a sweltering New Year’s Eve 2022 at the Great Western Racing and Recreation Reserve camp ground. Aged 74, I was on a camping trip with friends, and I was having a fantastic time. But as the mercury soared we were nearly melting.

Then lovely David popped over with a hose to fill up paddling pools and keep us cool.
