FIRST PERSON SINGULAR

I BEGAN keeping and breeding roller canaries when my father gave up budgerigars and I took over the now-empty birdroom and aviary complex in 1947.

Along with Dad, I was a member, of the local cage bird club. A breeder of Borders gave me a number of birds and soon I had a collection of all sorts, including British hardbills and foreign finches.

Through word of mouth I found a bird dealer and used to cycle the six miles to his home, where the long garden had aviaries along its entire length on both sides. Few of the birds in those aviaries were of interest to
