WHEN the first Heljan Class 47 was produced it was widely welcomed, despite a number of shortcomings in the model. It redeemed itself with good running qualities and with a number of different versions being produced in a departure from the one-size-fits-all approach to modelling of the time. It quickly became a common sight on most D&E layouts.
An over-width bodyshell, problems with the metal chassis frame, and other faults such as too-narrow bogies and proportional issues became more apparent as newer models from other manufacturers entered the market. The time was ripe for a retool whilst taking advantage of the excellent and durable drive system.
This review of a model from the first batch of Class 47s covering early- and mid-life locomotives examines whether Heljan has produced a Class 47 for the future.
