Fred Wright: a true friend

EDITOR'S TRIBUTE

I HAVE nowhere near “come to terms” with the fact that Fred died early on Sunday, May 12. But I need to write some things down. I can't put together an appraisal of Fred's career in budgies, nor an obituary, since I don't have all the facts; others do. What I want to tell you about is my friendship with Fred.

Friends we certainly were, not merely amicable colleagues, I as editor, Fred as key contributor. And it's not obvious we became friends, because we were almost laughably unlike. He, of course, had the budgerigar wisdom – I didn't. But he was also very much a man for the horses (did you know
