Growing outdoor tomatoes

Do you love tomatoes, yet don’t have a glasshouse or polytunnel? Don’t let that stop you! Outdoor tomato growing is increasingly viable these days in most areas due to blight resistant varieties, so let’s look at how best to cultivate them.

In ’s April 13 issue, I wrote about the very latest blight-resistant tomato varieties (e.g. ‘Cocktail Crush’ and ‘Oh Happy Day’) so that this destructive fungus doesn’t derail your tomato season. Hopefully you followed my lead and sowed some, because if so, now you’ll be looking at perfectly sized plants, ready for planting into tubs or borders – you should just be ablecompost, adding 30% by volume John Innes No. 2 or 3 to offer loam and substance. For beds and borders, choose as sunny a spot as possible and add compost or manure when planting out.
