Peter Davies’s interesting article about the Atkinson View-Line shows a photo and adds some remarks about the use by the vehicle by RTITB (Road Transport Industry Training Board as it was at the time).
RTITB ran a mixed fleet of vehicles for the training of HGV and PSV instructors at their training centres in High Ercall (Shropshire) and Livingston (between Edinburgh and Glasgow). They also leased vehicles to Group Training Associations throughout the country for the purpose of HGV and PSV driver training. in all cases, the requirements for the vehicles were that they had to be able to seat three (an instructor and two trainees). I suspect that Atkinson, having had some difficulty in selling the View-Line, offered a number to RTITB for an attractive price. After all, the sight of these vehicles around the country would be good for their image, wouldn’t it?
Many other vehicles were used, including Ford D Series, Dodge KP700s, Bedford KMs, TMs and some Leylands with seat adaptations. One of the other requirements was that the instructor had to have access to an emergency brake, so some brake applications had to be altered so that the
