The Olympic torch relay is under way
THE thrill around the Olympic Games is reaching fever pitch as athletes and fans alike look forward to the start of this global spectacle.
Recently, about 150 000 people converged in Marseille, France, to celebrate the arrival of the Olympic torch, one of the most well-known elements of the Games.
“This is the end of the preparation – the Games are now here in the lives of the French people. The torch is here. We can be proud,” said French president Emmanuel Macron.
WHAT IS THE OLYMPIC TORCH AND FLAME?
The Olympic flame and torch represent the positive values that mankind has always associated with fire: birth, development, life and passion. It also symbolises the link between the ancient and modern Olympic Games, while the torchbearers depict messengers of peace.
