Rust

IF YOU’VE ever seen an old box of tools or an old car that’s been left outside for many years, then you’ve probably seen how bits of the metal have started to change colour and flake off.

When metals become weakened, deteriorated or destroyed in this way it’s called corrosion. This corrosion is usually caused by the metal coming into contact with water and oxygen over a long period. When this type of corrosion happens to iron, it’s called rust.

WHAT IS RUST?

Technically, we only say something rusts when we speak about objects. Many metals undergo a process of corrosion, but it’s not called rust when metals such as aluminium or copper corrode. To understand rust, we need to look at the scientific process because .
