Bela Bill ‘could have dire consequences’

THE Basic Education Law Amendment (Bela) Bill seeks to make Grade R compulsory, criminalise parents who don’t send their children to school and regulate home schooling.

However, education experts warned this week that if signed into law, the bill could have dire consequences.

At the recent KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Districts Awards in Durban, Education Minister Angie Motshekga said the bill would usher in a new era for the country’s education system.

She said it addressed critical challenges that had, for years, hindered the progress of the education ecosystem.
