SMARTPHONES are changing the picture for camera sales – they are slowly killing the camera industry while boasting a dual purpose.

In most image-taking scenarios, the picture captured by the phone beats the camera, and there is no post-processing required. The computational power of smartphones allows sophisticated image enhancement in real time.

Photos (and even videos) taken on modern smartphones – not just those at the high-end of the smartphone market – are edging ever closer to the quality once the preserve of expensive interchangeable lens cameras. So much so, in fact, that most people no longer see the need to carry or buy a dedicated camera.
