CRITICAL staff shortages, poorly maintained vehicles and equipment, the ongoing water outages and the closure of the Jacobs Fire Station are hampering effective service delivery by firefighters in the eThekwini Municipality.
City spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana, said they had been alerted to the staffing challenges in 2018 and were still working towards a solution while trying to juggle service delivery woes.
A move by the city to convert more fire departments into water carrier stations has been criticised by firemen, who said this had taken away operational assets from the ground.
