BIRDS & BIRDKEEPING: FOCUS ON SUPPLEMENTS

I HAVE used supplements virtually throughout my time with birds and do so with the few pigeons in my care. Supplements, in this context, means additions to or extras in the diet or husbandry of your birds.

There are three recognised ways to administer them and I've used them all in my time. Perhaps the most common involves additives in the drinking water. Next would be additives to the staple seed mixture or eggfood and the third would be supplements provided on their own – free-standing. These could range from special seeds in an egg drawer; charcoal, mineral grit, etc, sprinkled on the cage floor; iodine blocks; cuttlefish bone; greenfood… the list is open to personal preference.
