Doxford crane tank takes shape

A FORMER Sunderland shipyard crane tank which has not steamed for more than half a century is being brought back to life in West Yorkshire.

Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn 0-4-0CT Southwick was built in 1942 as works number 7069 for Doxford & Son’s Pallion shipyard. It was one of several locomotives of similar design dating back to 1918, the earlier ones being built by Hawthorn Leslie & Co. These unusual locos gained much fame among enthusiasts as the last working examples of the type in commercial use during the late 1960s.
