Salt of the Earth

We prepped for our shoot with architect Professor Dr Jimmy Lim Cheok Siang at Wei-Ling Gallery, setting up the areas where we planned to take the shots. Finally, the man of the hour arrives, settling the items he brought for the shoot at his office space on the ground floor below the gallery and announces that he prefers to do the shoot down here. At 80 years of age, he has every reason not to climb the steps, and despite our initial misgivings, the ground floor space is definitely more of Lim’s cup of tea, containing collectibles as well as furniture he’s designed over the years. As we take his first shots, Lim cuts a dapper figure, proudly wearing his wedding suit from 1970.

Whether he meant to or not, the wedding suit, which is still beautifully preserved, reflects Lim’s proclivity for preserving history and cultural heritage. For instance, take his office building, which houses his practice, Jimmy Lim
