INANNA GOES TO THE UNDERWORLD

Inanna was prayed to by peasants and kings alike, and she made crops grow on the dusty plains of Mesopotamia.

But as time passed, the goddess grew bored with the sunlit world.

“Things are so dull here,” she would complain. “My sister Ereshkigal rules the underworld… perhaps I should pay her a visit! Her kingdom must be a fascinating place – far more interesting than my own realm.”

Inanna’s servant Ninsubur went pale when she heard this. “But your sister is cold and cruel” she gasped. “Nobody enters her land without paying a price!”

Inanna waved her do anything to me! Now, I must dress for my journey…”
