For reasons dating back to the disastrous 24 Hours of Le Mans of 1955, the all-American Cheetah never got its chance to fulfill Chevrolet’s desire to counter the Ford-powered Cobra that was upstaging- and outrunning-Corvettes on SCCA’s national stage. Undermined by GM’s ban on corporate racing, a makeshift factory stopped building Cheetahs after Chevrolet halted parts deliveries in early 1964, falling far short of the 100-car homologation target.
