Brisbane-based Danish road racer Rob Olsen rode a Bultaco Metralla into Australian road racing history. After winning on debut at Surfers Paradise, Rob decimated the Lakeside 250cc Production lap record with a 1m 9.7 second lap. Incredibly, that record stood for 9 years, making it the longest standing Production class lap record in Australian road racing history and quite possibly the longest standing class record. These were the days when “what won on Sunday, sold on Monday”. The 250cc Production class was hotly contested with Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki all vying for classRob’s 250cc lap record was also 0.2 seconds under the 350cc lap record of the day set by Craig Trudgett on a 350cc Kawasaki. Statistics are one thing, but it is the back story that makes this feat incredible.
