Day Ride
Around 8am we turned on to the A888 – known locally as the ‘ring road’ – in an anti-clockwise direction, and headed almost immediately up a steep hill that swept left providing views of rolling fields and sheep, with the port and ocean views behind us. We headed to the ferry in the North of Barra for our crossing to Eriskay, passing Brevig, Earsairidh and Buaile nam Bodach, names reflecting the Norse as well as Gaelic influences woven into this land. Just past Bayherivagh, a single track winds gleefully downhill before turning right towards the airport and ferry terminal. Exactly a mile along the airport road, we took a right at the sign for Aird Mhor Ferry Terminal and the Otter Café, located at the end of a track that wended its way gently to the water’s edge.
Grabbing coffee and fluffy scones, still warm from the café’s oven, we
