With their wonderful variety of structural forms and colours, succulents broaden a gardener’s plant palette – whether they are planted to creep along the ground, tumble over walls, add flower power to borders, or to cast radiant rosettes skywards.
As a group, succulents vary hugely in size, shape, colour, habit and hardiness. Among the smallest are creeping, ground-covering sedums and sempervivum mats, while at the other end of the scale stand majestic agaves and tree aeoniums.
The forms of the leafy rosettes of echeveria, sempervivum and aeonium are the most recognisable. Leaf colours vary from dull blue or glaucous to purple and bright green, tinted with red, yellow or orange. Many also, which can be seen cascading over walls in warm regions.
