THE essential requirements of any floor covering are that it is absorbent, will not be blown out of the cage in great quantities and is safe for the birds to chew and investigate.
If you look through old bird books, sand is often quoted as being a suitable material for cage floors. The advantages were said to be that it gave birds the opportunity to pick throughsand does stay wet and it is heavy, too, so less easy to deal with when you put it into your rubbish sacks.
