‘Part-time work pays for my wanderlust’

Fiona Lockyer, 61, lives in Manchester.

Some people take time to travel before they start work, but I did things the other way around. In December 2019, having worked in the hospitality industry for 40 years, I decided to retire from my role as hotel manager and take time out to travel. Having paid into a pension since 18 and with my twin daughters, Hebe and Imogen, now 25, at uni, it seemed the perfect moment.

In the end, starting my year of travel in January 2020 wasn’t ideal. But I had two wonderful months in Kenya before
