The building block of character: Part ONE

So far, in our meandering through the Building Blocks of Creative Writing, we have taken a look at the Building Block of Structure and the Building Block of Setting. We will now examine another of the fundamental Building Blocks of Creative Writing: the Building Block of Character. Before I was asked to write this column, there may be some of you who remember I wrote a couple of articles on Character and Voice early in 2023. This makes things a little tricky. I do not want to repeat verbatim everything I said in those articles, yet I cannot – for the sake of this series – leave out something as fundamental as the Building Block of Character.

This dilemma puts me in mind of when I first contemplated writing a sequel to my debut novel. It occurred to me very quickly I had to write the sequel for readers that had read the first novel and also for readers that hadn’t.
