Bay watch

THIS PAINTING IS A VIEW of the bay near La Ciotat, a small French fishing village not far from Marseille. It’s famous in the history of painting because Braque, Matisse and other Fauves worked there in the early part of the 20th century. Their work brought the excitement of the use of pure colour into painting.

A painting isn’t just about copying the landscape but trying to give a real sense of the experience of looking at it. You are trying to evoke an emotional response that is equivalent to actually being there. This is what I was hoping to do here, by
