Vegetable oil, for frying
2 cups self-rising white cornmeal mix
1 cup self-rising flour
½ cup finely chopped green onion
½ cup finely chopped tasso
1½ teaspoons kosher salt
1½ cups whole buttermilk
1 large egg

1. In a large Dutch oven, pour oil to a depth of 2 inches, and heat over medium heat until a deep-fry thermometer registers 350°.
