Notes from the Isles

On some of our most remote walks I’ve noticed signposts saying: ‘J. O. G.’. In my ignorance, I thought they were just encouraging people to ‘jog’ but now I’ve discovered that they point the way to the John o’ Groats Trail. Not the Land’s End to John o’ Groats walkers’ route, which is about 1,200 miles, but a designated hiking route from Inverness, across the Black Isle, up to Dornoch, and then a coastal track to Duncansby Head – the most north-eastern point of the UK mainland, with John o’ Groats just to the south-west.

The full trail covers 145 miles in total –
