General licence in England
The general licence is issued by Natural England (part of the Government) to allow people to legally shoot certain bird species that are not on the quarry list. You don’t need to apply for a general licence but it is vital that you know what it covers.
The general licence is split into three main permits: GL40, GL41 and GL42. GL40 is about conservation; GL41 covers public health and safety, including preventing the spread of diseases, and GL42 explains when you can kill wild birds in order to prevent serious damage to crops, livestock and foodstuffs for livestock.
