Canadian Dollar Honors Historical Ship

Many early issues of Coins magazine focused on world coins, including those from Canada. The cover of the June 1965 issue featured a 1949 Canadian Accession of Newfoundland dollar showing explorer John Cabot’s ship the Matthew.

The article, “Hand Craftsmanship in Canadian Silver,” explained: “Thomas Shingles became chief engraver of the Royal Canadian mint in 1939 and a decade later he was still very much on the job. When Newfoundland joined the dominion as a province in 1949 he drew the assignment of designing a silver dollar to commemorate the occasion.
