CORTICOSTEROIDS are naturally occurring hormones within the body that are essential for life. Produced by the adrenal gland in response to various triggers, including the release of ACTH (adrenocorticotrophic hormone) from the pituitary gland, they help regulate all body cells and organ systems.
They consist of mineralocorticoids, such as aldosterone, which are involved in electrolyte and fluid balance, and glucocorticoids, such as cortisol, which are cholesterol-derived and are pivotal in the metabolism of glucose, fats and protein. The latter can also affect vascular tone, stress response and the regulation of sleep and mood.
However, it is their potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties that make glucocorticoids so valuable in the treatment of a range of medical and musculoskeletal conditions in horses.
