TIP FOR TRACING SOMEONE WITH A COMMON NAME
Nick Peers' article in the May issue comparing the main genealogical websites reminded me how good the newspaper collection on Findmypast (findmypast.co.uk) is for tracing difficult-to-find ancestors.
Searching recently for one Mary, who was born with the unusual surname of Gard, I discovered that she had married a James Davis. Tracing a Mary Davis was problematic. However, she came from a place called Montacute in Cornwall, so I searched on Findmypast's newspaper collection for Mary Davis and Montacute, and hey presto! discovered that she lived to be 100. A wonderful article with the headline “Somerset Centenarian's Death” was published in the on Saturday 12 December 1946, and mentioned her 11 children and 15 grandchildren. So thank you for the reminder not to forget
