IN-PERSON EVENTS
The elevation of General Register House. Image in the public domain
Celebrate the 250th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of Robert-Adam-designed General Register House (on 27 June 1774), and take an in-person 40-minute tour. First opening its doors in 1789, General Register House has been home to Scotland’s archives for more than two centuries and is the first purpose-built, public record repository in Britain and Ireland.
See also in-person talks on the celebratory programme (such as: ‘The foundation of General Register House in Edinburgh’s first New Town - its most important building’, 25 June 4-5pm, with Dr Anthony Lewis); and the in-person)
