My mother is a minimalist. When I was growing up, she never bothered buying a colander; she'd drain pasta, or whatever else she was cooking, by cracking a pot with drainage holes in the lid—any one of which would have saved me from many pasta mishaps over the years—and I still drain pasta exactly the way I learned to do it from Mom.
