Luggers take centre stage in Ullapool
The first Ullapool Lugger Festival was held in May to celebrate the great herring fleet of sailing fishing boats that once frequented the Scottish port during the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the renewed interest in these gaff-rigged workboats.
It was a huge success, attracting some 25 historic boats from as far away as Cornwall and from across the Hebrides. The stars of the show were undoubtedly the 38ft 6in pilchard driver , built in 1881, now maintained and crewed by a group of enthusiastic volunteers from the Cornish Maritime Trust, and two recently restored herring boats, the built in 1910, and the 1911, 36ft Loch Fyne skiff .
